Self-Care Sanity: Idea #7 – The Gift of a Time Out

7-matineeI’m a firm believer in dedicated work hours.  But, I also believe if you’ve given all you’ve got and you’re feeling you have no more left to give – it’s time for a break. A time out from your business.

What better break then going to a mid-afternoon matinee?! First of all, it’s a lot cheaper than an evening movie, but more importantly a  good movie,  well written, and well-acted, can take you out of your own life for a while and give you a much needed break that most of us need at some point.

Get on Google right now and check out the movies for the upcoming week and grab a matinee this week.

Self-Care Sanity: Idea #6 – The Gift of Not Thinking About Calories

6-gift-of-no-caloriesYes, I know we’re all watching our calories and cutting back on what is not good for us.  This is key to living a healthy lifestyle. That’s fantastic!

A big piece of self-care is taking care of our body.  But, I want you to know that once in awhile it is absolutely ok to splurge with a really yummy dessert and enjoy every single bite.

Yes, every single bite! My favorite splurge is Haagen-Daaz ice cream. Addi’s is frosted Valentine cookies!

Self-Care Sanity: Idea #5 – The GIft of Rest

5-take-a-nap-Many of us have a tendency to fill our lives up to the brim. Sometimes it works; sometimes it doesn’t. Most of the time it leaves us stressed and really, really tired.

The National Sleep Foundation suggests adults get 7-9 hours of sleep. How much sleep are you getting?  It may be time to take this seriously.

But, what about during the day?  Is a nap a good thing? I don’t think it is if you are using it to avoid a project you’ve been putting off. When you feel overwhelmed you may tell yourself “I am so tired. I’ll just take a quick nap and then tackle this task.”  A nap just prolongs getting the task done. You may tell yourself you’re tired when really you don’t know the next step to take.

But, if you really feel a break of around 20-30 minutes for a nap would improve your mood, alertness, and productivity – go for it! I would suggest using a timer or it may turn into an all afternoon siesta!

Self-Care Sanity: Idea #3 – The Gift of Your Thoughts

I’m curious.  Do you give yourself time to look back on each day?

3-day-one-app(2)If not, let’s start. Get a beautiful journal or use one of my favorite apps, DayOne, and at the close of each day write down what you did, what you learned, what you did well, and what you could improve.

This is a wonderful way to close the day, whether it was a great day or not so great, so you can give it closure.

 

It’s also great to look back to remember. Two years ago my dad was in hospice and I was sitting by his chair when I felt something on my hair. I looked down and dad was looking up at me stroking my hair and smiling. One of the best moments in my life. As you can imagine, that was a very stressful time and if I hadn’t written it in my journal I may have forgotten that moment; as special as it was to me.

Give yourself the gift of your thoughts every day.

Self-Care Sanity: Idea #2 – The Gift of a Chat

2-pink-phone(2)Remember the good-old days when you could chat with a girlfriend for hours after school? Remember how the time would fly? Remember how good you felt after the call?

Today it’s time to reach out to a friend – perhaps even a high school friend you haven’t been in touch with for a while – and chat.

Enjoy each other. Enjoy laughing.  Just enjoy.

Self-Care Sanity: Idea #1 – The Gift of Acknowledgement

1-amazing-things-og-mandinoDo you realize how amazing you are?  Do your really? Right now write down 10 amazing things about yourself. This is not the time to be shy.

Then every morning before you start your day read this list.  You will sit up taller, be more confident, and have a much better day!

If you struggle with this please read The Greatest Miracle in the World by Og Mandino. Because this is what you are – the greatest miracle in the world.

Get out of your office!

We just may have started Spring here in South Dakota!  It’s sunny and in the 50’s today which is a dream come true.  It’s time to get outside and enjoy the sun!

Speaking of getting outside – have you been spending too much time in your office?  Are things feeling a little stale?

addi-chalkSometime in the next week or so go to a coffee shop or a park and get out and dream. Start writing down your dreams (or coloring!) and dream big. Write everything down and do not let the sky be the limit.

Where do you want to be in one year, two years, and three years? What do you want your income to be, how many clients every month, how many speaking engagements a year,whatever pertains to your business but get out of your office and dream big.

Break these dreams down into action steps and then think in terms of 30-day plans:

  • Look at your big dreams
  • Break them down into action steps
  • What can you do in the next 30 days?
  • When the next 30 days comes up ask yourself again – now, what can I do in the next 30 days?

You will see your dreams and goals come true if you break them down into action steps and then into 30-day periods.

Listen to the song “Dream Big” by Ryan Shupe and the RubberBand.  Listen at least 2-3 times. It’s a beautiful song and…well, I’m not going to say anything more about it – just listen to it and enjoy.

Then get out of your office! I’ll meet you outside!
