Marketing will always work better if…

1.  You are tracking your numbers properly
Get clear on the money side of your business. If you aren’t clear then everything else is muddy.

Use software such as QuickBooks to keep track of income and expenses.  Use our amazing tracking tool to keep track of your bookings and if you are on track to reach your Optimistic Number.  If you don’t have the tracking tool then you must attend one of my Growing Your Business with Confidence events!

2.  You have a defined O.D.I. (Owner’s Discretionary Income) payment schedule
As business owners we have roles, responsibilities, expectations, and we have a compensation package.  This is referred to as our Owner’s Discretionary Income or O.D.I.

Decide now what you’re going to pay yourself and then decide when.  The 1st and 15th?  Every Friday?

If it terrifies you to pay yourself first before taking care of expenses this is a very good thing.  You will do a MUCH better job of marketing. This is going to make you pick up the phone, this is going to make you follow-up, this is going make you talk to more people at a networking event, etc.

Start marketing to pay yourself vs. marketing to pay your bills.  Amazing things are going to happen!

3.  You execute a mix of primary strategies
There are 8 core marketing strategies:

  • Networking
  • Advertising
  • Showcase
  • Telemarketing
  • Trade show
  • Advocate
  • Direct Mail
  • Publicity

You should be working with 3 primary strategies. Primary means that you are executing the strategy monthly.  Which 3 will you pick?

4.  You have a clear profile of your right fit
Not everyone in the world is a good client for you.  So, why are you marketing to everyone?!  Put together your profile of your right fit with demographic parameters and environmental triggers. When you have your profile then you will start ‘seeing’ your right fit and marketing becomes SO much easier.

5.  You have a payoff in your messaging
What is your call to action in your marketing messages? You need to be very clear in how they can contact you AND offer them something special by contacting you. Perhaps a free report, a free 20-minute consultation, an article, etc.

The magic is in the mix.

Elizabeth’s Assignments:

  1. Make a decision today that you are going to take action on these 5 ideas.
  2. Take action by picking one to start today.
  3. Stay focused and start implementing these one by one.  Your business will thank you!

Are YOU on your payroll?!

Woman holding cash

Do you know who the most important person is on your payroll? It’s you. Are you paying yourself?

Don’t want to answer?!

Up until recently I felt the same way.  I based what I paid myself on what was left over after taking care of expenses. That is not how a business owner acts.  As business owners we have roles, responsibilities, expectations, and we have a compensation package.  This is referred to as our Owner’s Discretionary Income or ODI.

When you put yourself 2nd on the payroll this has a ripple effect on your marketing.  When you start paying yourself first you’ll do a better job of managing expenses and putting money in your pocket.

Elizabeth’s Assignments:

  1. Make a decision today that you are going to pay yourself first and on a regular basis.
  2. Take action and set up an automatic withdrawal for your salary.
  3. Stay focused and don’t stop when things get tight.

It May Be Time for a Mindshift

Are you thinking your glass is half- full or half-empty…or you are asking ‘what glass’?!

I know that it is important to market our business, attend the right networking functions, and just get ‘out there’ so potential clients know about us.  But are you feeling that you are doing that but your business is stalled?

Maybe it has nothing to do with what you are doing but more about how you are ‘being’.  Are you of the mindset that nothing is working, the economy has tanked, no one has the money to pay for your services, everyone else is busy except you, yada yada yada?

It may be time for a mindshift!

Mindshift Makeover:

  1. Get a beautiful journal that you just love to hold. It should have blank or lined pages.  I’m serious here!  Don’t just go grab some old spiral notebook – treat yourself to something special.journal
  2. Every day set an appointment with yourself for 5 minutes to write down in your journal what you are grateful for AND what you have done that day that was a success.  If you have a day that you can’t think of a success write down a previous success.  But, trust me, every day you are on this earth is a success.
  3. Make this a glorious habit.  Once you get used to doing this you’re going to look forward to this ‘gratitude’ time each day.
  4. Watch your mindshift start to happen. Your thinking is going to start being more positive and uplifting. And, you’re going to be more uplifting to others in your life.
  5. It’s impossible to whine when you are being thankful.  If during the day you start to focus on all that is bad grab your journal and start reading.  Your day will change immediately!
  6. Stuck on what to do for marketing some day?  Read about some past successes in your journal and your mind will open up and give you the best ideas.
  7. Share your successes with supportive people in your life and ask them to share with you. A whole new dialogue is going to happen.

Elizabeth’s Assignment:

  1. Make a decision to follow these steps. It won’t hurt to try!
  2. Take action by doing this every day even if it means climbing out of bed during the night to do it because you forgot!
  3. Stay focused during your ‘gratitude’ time and don’t stop until you’ve written all that you are thankful for and at least one success.
