Self-Care Sanity: Idea #7 – The Gift of a Time Out

7-matineeI’m a firm believer in dedicated work hours.  But, I also believe if you’ve given all you’ve got and you’re feeling you have no more left to give – it’s time for a break. A time out from your business.

What better break then going to a mid-afternoon matinee?! First of all, it’s a lot cheaper than an evening movie, but more importantly a  good movie,  well written, and well-acted, can take you out of your own life for a while and give you a much needed break that most of us need at some point.

Get on Google right now and check out the movies for the upcoming week and grab a matinee this week.

Self-Care Sanity: Idea #5 – The GIft of Rest

5-take-a-nap-Many of us have a tendency to fill our lives up to the brim. Sometimes it works; sometimes it doesn’t. Most of the time it leaves us stressed and really, really tired.

The National Sleep Foundation suggests adults get 7-9 hours of sleep. How much sleep are you getting?  It may be time to take this seriously.

But, what about during the day?  Is a nap a good thing? I don’t think it is if you are using it to avoid a project you’ve been putting off. When you feel overwhelmed you may tell yourself “I am so tired. I’ll just take a quick nap and then tackle this task.”  A nap just prolongs getting the task done. You may tell yourself you’re tired when really you don’t know the next step to take.

But, if you really feel a break of around 20-30 minutes for a nap would improve your mood, alertness, and productivity – go for it! I would suggest using a timer or it may turn into an all afternoon siesta!

Self-Care Sanity: Idea #1 – The Gift of Acknowledgement

It might be just this simple

addi-formWe watched our grandchildren, Addi, who is almost 4, and Alex, who is 7 months, for six days while their parents relaxed in Florida.  We had a great time together although the nights were a bit interesting!

At about day 2 Addi kept asking how many days until mommy and daddy come home. She could not visualize the phrase ‘only 4 more days’.

I started thinking about how I could make this real for her. I asked Emily to draw a diagram with boxes by the various activities she would do the next few days until her parents got back home. Genius – if I do say so myself!

Once Addi had the diagram and could check off the boxes as the days went by she no longer asked ‘how many days’ or was anxious.  She had a plan and she could see progress.

Are you overwhelmed by all there is to do in your business?  Stop right now and make a diagram of what needs to get done and boxes to check off for you to see progress.

Sometimes it works to go back to the simple ways of doing things!

Straight Ahead

I got a new paper-based planner for 2015. It’s called the ‘My iBloom 2015 Life & Business Planner’. While my Outlook calendar which syncs to my iPhone is my go-to calendar I wanted a paper-based planner to do long term planning.  I fell in love when I saw the iBloom planner.  It is colorful, feminine, and includes Bible verses. What could be better?

In the ‘My 2015 Plan’ section the creator talks about having a theme for the year.  Many years in the past I’ve had a theme but have not the past few years.  I started thinking about my theme and what I want 2015 to be all about for myself and my business. I couldn’t come up with one.

Last week Bruce and I were driving to Orange City, IA to see my precious 90-year-old mom.  I brought along my planner to do, well, some planning!  I started talking to Bruce about a theme for the year.  As I read to him what the planner gave as ideas my theme came to me.

Be present.

Yes, that’s it. It may sound simple but this is huge. What if I were really, I mean really, present in every aspect of my life.  I like to think I am all ready but I know there are many times I’m not.

Bruce-Christmas-2014As I was talking to Bruce about this I asked if he had a theme for the year. He said “I’ve never had a theme.”

Ok, what about for 2015?”

He was quiet for a few minutes and then he said “Straight ahead.”
Now it was my turn to think for a few minutes.  Yes, straight ahead.  Genius.

He then asked me “Elizabeth, do you know what happens when you back at the past?”

“You stop.”

I don’t know if wiser words were ever spoken.

No more looking back.  It’s time to look straight ahead.

When you find yourself stopping think of Bruce saying in a very stern voice “Straight ahead”.

By the way, in case you are wondering what my shirts says it’s “Luxury Item”.  Yes, that’s me!

2015 Success Now: Action Step #28 – Specialize and be Remembered

magic-wandI’ve had the honor of speaking many times at the National Association of Professional Organizers national conventions. At one of my sessions I had the audience stand and asked those to sit who did not feel they were an expert at what they did. Almost 75% of the room sat down.

This was heartbreaking.

I then told those who sat down to stand up again and I waved my magic wand over all of them and declared to them “You are an expert…right now!”

Years ago I was asking my business coach, Mark LeBlanc, about attending another certification program.   He paused for a long time and then said “Elizabeth, you know enough right now.”

Words that changed my life then and they keep changing my life.

I have nothing against furthering your education, getting certified, etc. but if you are waiting for that next popular thing (whatever it is) to learn and then you will go out and get clients…you are fooling yourself. I encourage you to go to conferences on how to market and grow your business but as far as learning more on how to do what you to…you know enough.

You are an expert now. If I were with you I’d wave my magic wand over you!

Stand up, put your shoulders back and declare “I am THE expert in  ___________________”.  If the back of your business card claims 10 fields you specialize in pick the ONE you love the most as your field of expertise and get rid of the other 9 on the back of your card.

Look at your website, your marketing materials, etc.  Is your expertise clear?  If not, make some changes.

Now is not the time to be all things for all people.  Now is the time to be the expert in what you love the most for the sliver of population that needs exactly what you offer. This is what it takes to be remembered.

Start off 2015 as THE expert.

Now, walk about 10 steps and stop.  You are now at Sunday, Dec.28, 2015.  Turn and look back to your original spot.

You are looking back at the past year (12-28-14 to 12-28-15) and it was an amazing year.

Answer these questions:

  • What did you bring in for gross revenue?
  • What did you achieve in your business?
  • What did you start doing?
  • What did you stop doing?
  • What kind of clients did you work with?
  • How many new clients hired you?
  • What vacations did you take?
  • How is your physical health?
  • How is your emotional health?

Go back to your original spot of today.  Smile as you think about the amazing year you are about to have in 2015. Relax. Breathe.

Now, get out your calendar and wall calendar from Action Step #24 and get what you need scheduled in your calendar so your dreams come true.
