The saxman rocked the house!
At our recent church service we had an awesome surprise. Greg Vail
, a saxophonist from California, joined our worship band and he rocked the house. He was amazing. I didn't want to leave and could have listened to him all night.
He was truly a master at his craft. During one of the songs he was playing a solo and I was watching some of the other band members - the pianists, the guitarists, and the drummer. Their hands were poised on their instruments and their eyes locked on Greg. I mean locked. At one point Greg took his hand off of his saxophone and made a slight movement and immediately the other members of the band joined in. This was focus in action.
Of course, as I always do, I started thinking about what happened and how I could apply this to my business.
What if we were to be as focused on our business as those band members were on Greg? What if every sense and thought were focused on one task at hand? Can you even imagine what you would accomplish?
When the service was over I saw the band laughing and having fun together. The focus was over. That is what should happen to us when we leave our office - relax and have fun. But, just like the band members during the service when we are in our office let's focus on rocking the house!

- Make a decision that you are going to focus on your business when you are in your office.
- Take action and decide every day on the three top high-value activities that will help you reach your Optimistic Number and these tasks must be business development steps. Write them down in the morning and do them right away.Click here for a great form to use. You may not be familiar with the term "Optimistic Number". Your Optimistic Number is that number that represents the amount of work you want to do in a month at your current fee levels with your fun meter on max, and having the kind of balance you want between your work and home life. The key words in the definition are 'in a month'. Always work in 30-day increments - not one-year goals.
- Stay focused on getting your three HVAs (high-value activities) done every day. Keep you eyes locked on the tasks you wrote down (which means stay off of Facebook and e-mail until you are done!).
