It's time to serve yourself first. Sound selfish? Perhaps. But necessary.
Recently I was made aware again of another woman who had put herself second to everything and everyone else and could have had disastrous results.
In my book Confidence: Now is Your Time I have a chapter titled "You're Having A Heart Attack". I tell the story of becoming very ill on an airplane and the worry that I was having a heart attack. In that chapter I share a thank you note I received two years after I had spoken to a group of educators on taking care of themselves first.
The note said in part:
This is a thank you note that was due two years ago. You gave a presentation to my company in April 2006. I was not feeling well but decided to make the trip to work that day to hear you speak.
Your workshop happened to hit on taking care of yourself....the next Monday I went to the doctor and by Thursday I was back for tests. I was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. I have been beating the odds so far.
Your word were all I needed to get where I should have been two months before. I hope that each and every one of your workshops hits the subject of taking care of yourself first.
Recently I received a letter from a woman who had purchased my book. She said that when she read that chapter it froze her in her tracks. She had been neglecting and dismissing her own health. She had been putting off going to the doctor for over a year, and her symptoms weren't going away, but instead getting worse. She was in total denial that anything was wrong. She thought I'm just getting old! After reading the chapter she felt like God was screaming at her, "Get to the doctor". The happy ending is that she had a benign tumor the size of a tennis ball removed and she is well on her way to recovery.
Do you still feel that putting yourself first is selfish? I hope not.
