Essentialism, please

I have read and then re-read the book Essentialism: The Disciplined Pursuit of Less by Greg McKeown

Greg says the definition of essentialism is less but better. I love that! He also talks about how the word priority was singular for 500 years until we pluralized it in the early 1900’s. He says, Illogically, we reasoned that by changing the word we could bend reality. Somehow, we would now be able to have multiple ‘first’ things.

I think that is fascinating. How can we have multiple first things? Kind of silly.

I am the creator of the Clear the Desk Movement.  I adapted this term from the phrase ‘clear the decks’. To ‘clear the decks’ means to prepare for a particular event or goal by dealing with anything beforehand that might hinder progress.

Having too many ‘first’ things hinders progress.

I decided to take my Clear the Desk Movement philosophy to my office workroom closet. It was very organized but full of lots of ‘first things’. In fact, bins and bins and bins, nicely labeled, but too full.  It was time to change. It took me awhile and lots of decisions but I got rid of all the bins in the lower section of the photograph and now my closet is free of what is not essential.

This feels amazing.

I took my Clear the Desk Movement philosophy to my business as well. Of all my services and product offerings which was the most essential to my prospects, clients. and to me.  I had many ‘first’ things I offer. This took a lot of soul searching. I discovered that helping my audiences and clients get unstuck and stop feeling lost is my priority and essential to my business.

Greg says, When we don’t purposefully and deliberately choose where to focus our energies and time, other people – our bosses, our colleagues, our clients, and even our families – will chose for us, and before long we’ll have lost sight of everything that is meaningful and important.

What is essential to you? I mean really essential?

Maybe you don’t know. This is a very common feeling. I talk to so many people who feel lost.

This Saturday it will be the start of the second half of the year. Yes, we all ask, where did the time go?

Think of how much more excited you would be to enter the second half of 2017 with excitement if you were clear on your goals and clear on what is essential in your life.

Let’s go old school

With all the electronic and battery-operated toys out there I find it quite amazing to see children play with what I call ‘old school’ toys.

Do you remember Play-Doh?! Do you remember how fun it was? It’s all about creativity with no electronic mechanism to help you.

Last Saturday was Alexander’s 3rd birthday and he received a fun Play-Doh cooking. Addilynn and Alex brought it over to my house and we had a blast. We had green and yellow french fries, red hamburgers, blue watermelon, and much more!

Old school. I’ve been noticing it lately:

  • A mom with three children drove by on their bikes and the mom was on an old-fashioned cruiser bike with the rear rack and front basket. Remember those?
  • Remember the Crayola crayon boxes? Adult coloring is very popular. There are a plethora of coloring books with intricate pictures for adults to color and de-stress themselves.
  • Sidewalk chalk. Two doors down lives a girl who uses chalk to make intricate drawings and phrases on their driveway. I love walking by her house.
  • Roller blading. I thought that was long gone but when I bike on the bike trails I see that is still popular.
  • Hop Skotch, bed jumping, hide and seek – these are some of the fun activities Addie, Alex, and I have had together. Alex thinks we can’t see him when he has a pillow over his head!

I just realized all the above examples require being present. That’s what is missing when we bury our head into our tablets, phones, and computers.

Old school. How can you incorporate this into your life and business?

The first Old School method we can implement is to start looking up. That’s where life is found. Then, go for a bike ride!

Just a little help might be nice

alex-climbing-wall-1Addilynn and Alexander were thrilled when their parents got them a fabulous swing set with a climbing wall! What could be better?

I know in a matter of weeks Alexander will be doing this by himself. But, for right now, he needs a little help.

Have you ever felt that way in your life or business? You could use just a little help right now? You know you’ll be ok in the future but, for right now, you need some help.

This was true for me with:

  • Learning computer programs
  • QuickBooks
  • Giving webinars and teleclasses
  • Designing Mind Maps
  • Discovering the ins and outs of being a professional speaker
  • Marketing
  • Parenting
  • …the list could go on and on!

Where could you use help? Please don’t be afraid to ask. That’s the issue. So often we struggle along on our own only to find if we had just asked – we’d be much further than we are right now.

Live and learn!

Confidence-bookIn 2011, I started looking back at my life and all I had learned. I started typing up the stories associated with the events and lessons learned and it became something I am very proud of – The Confidence: Now is Your Time – 30 Days to a More Extraordinary You book. This book has helped many give themselves the permission to be who they were created to be.

Just a little help – that’s all you need! The answers are in this book. Get one for yourself and one for a friend!

Look up

sky

I had a coaching client tell me yesterday she was going to put her head down (figuratively) and focus on a project. This made perfect sense as she was wanting to avoid distractions.

After thinking about it, though, I told her to look up instead.

Just the term ‘put my head down’ causes a negative feeling. One of bondage, almost.

But, thinking ‘look up’ instead is a feeling of optimism, the future, good things ahead, etc.

When my dad was first moved into hospice we could not find his gold watchdad-watch that he had for 40 years. This watch represented a huge portion of his life and I was determined to find it. I finally found it in the pocket of his coat and when I put it on his frail wrist he looked up at me with a smile and said, “Man, things are really looking up!” In 2 seconds my dad became a motivational speaker!

He was facing the last days of his life and he found a way to make a sad situation a positive one.

If we look for the good during a day; we will find it. If we look for the bad during the day; we will find it.

If we look for the good in ourself and others; we will find it.

Maybe it’s time to look up.

Keeping our head down is exhausting. Look up and see the awesomeness in your life and others.

What do you see?!

Post-It Notes, really?!

30post-it-notes-planning

Have you ever planned what you wanted to do that day only to find at the end of the day you did everything BUT what you had planned?

I was visiting my amazing friend, Theresa Rose, in Minneapolis. She showed me a unique way to know what you want to do each day and stay on track. Very unique. Using Post-It Notes!

She has a home office and in her office is a fireplace with 5 tiles at the top. She takes unique colored post-it-notes and labels them: Marketing, Sales, Network, Social Media, Admin, Book, etc. She then looks at her calendar to see if she has a speaking event that week. If she does, she puts a ‘Job’ Post-It Note on the day’s tile. Then she takes her other Post-It Notes of tasks she wants to accomplish that week and puts them in the ‘am’ or ‘pm’ spot on her tiles.

She can just glance at the tile to know what she needs to do. Genius!

So, of course, with her blessing, I did what she did! I used the cupboard theresa-computerabove my desk and there are 6 doors. Perfect. One for each day Monday through Saturday.

Now I know exactly what to do every day.

Theresa also has a very cool way to make sure she does what she says she’s going to do. She puts a bright-colored Post-It Note on her computer that says, “Back On Track”!

Do you need a new way to look at your week? If so, give the post-it-note thing a try!

Have you said these words lately?

On Sunday my husband, Bruce, and daughter, Abigail, visited mom. She was having a day where she was feeling exhausted and wasn’t her usual bright shiny self. abby-mom-me

But, when she realized it we us, she said, “You are here again? I am so blessed. You always do extra.”

How often when someone sees you they see you, “I am so blessed.”?
How often when you see someone do you say, “I am so blessed.”?

What would happen in your life and work if you started using mom’s phrase?

I think amazing things would happen!

The picture on the left was taken right before we left and she would not let go of my hands. I didn’t want to let go, either. Can you see how peaceful she is?

That’s how we feel when we are around people who bless us.

Is it time to choose to be with people who bless you and you bless them?

My challenge: Tell two people today that you are so blessed when you are with them.

I’d like to bless you! If you are not a member of my Clear the Desk Movement, let’s get you signed up. Every day we have great posts and encouragement to help you not only clear the desk, but your fears, your mind, your clutter – whatever is holding you back.  You can join here.

All is well

Have you ever wanted to do something that you knew would be great – but you were scared? But, you really wanted to do it?

easter-3That was Addilynn on Easter when we were visiting my mom. Uncle Sean challenged her to jump to him. Addilynn wasn’t so sure at first. But, she trusted Sean and jumped with a scream. Then, of course, she wanted to do it over and over again!

She trusted Uncle Sean and all was well.

Perhaps you trusted someone in the past and they let you down. Now, it’s hard to trust anyone. I so get that.

Thankfully, today is your fresh start.

1st: Trust yourself. If you say you’re going to take a walk – take a walk. If you say you’re going to eat healthier – eat healthier. If you say you’re going to organize the makeup drawer – do it.

But, if you are like 99.999% of the people in the world you don’t always do what you say you are going to do.

That’s where the fresh start comes in. Every day you can start over. The more you do what you say you are going to do – the more you can trust yourself.

2nd: Trust God. He will never let you down. Things may not be in your timing or how you thought it may happen – but you can trust Him. When you trust Him, no matter the outcome, all is well.

3rd: Trust me! I want to assist you in clearing out the gunk in your life – physically and emotionally – and have you feel all is well with yourself. One way I can help you is in my Clear the Desk Movement. If you are not a member, why not? Join here..
