365 Days of Gratitude – Day 39: Long-time friends

Bruce and I moved to Sioux Falls 22.5 years ago when Chris was 7, Emily was 5, Abby was 4, and Sean was 2.  We started going to 1st Baptist right away and I think the first week we were here I attended the Mom’s Morning Out program at church.  Wendy was there.  Something about her clicked with me and I knew I wanted to be her friend.  And we were and we did. For over 22 years.  I am so grateful for Wendy. We’ve both had a lot happen the last 22 years and have been there for each other. Wendy is the kind of person who always has the right thing to say.  It’s a gift! Today we went out for lunch for her birthday like we’ve done the last 22 years and I hope for the next 22!

Day 16: Imagined Fears

Speaking at workshopI presented my “Organize with Confidence” workshop tonight in Sioux Falls to 30 wonderful women.  What fun!

If I had never faced my huge fear of speaking 9 years ago I would not have been in front of these women tonight. I would not have met the thousands of great people I’ve enjoyed meeting the last 9 years of speaking.  I can not imagine where my life or my business would be if I had not stood up to my fear.

This was no imagined fear. I was terrified of speaking, absolutely terrified.  But, as a stubborn, Dutch woman I was more terrified of failing at this new business I started in 2000 so  when my friend, Renee, said “Elizabeth, you need to give workshops to let people know about your expertise” I listened.  One of the best things I’ve ever done.

I heard that fear stands for Fantasized (and usually fearful) Experiences Appearing Real.  Well, that’s the truth. Most of what we fear it totally imagined.

I was thinking about things I used to fear such as giving teleclasses, traveling alone, eating along when traveling, meeting new people, being on TV and radio, etc. I’ve been able to conquer all of those fears because I first faced my fear of speaking.  I figure that if I can stand up in front of large (or even small) groups of people I can do anything!

It’s Time for More Personal Time!

This is a difficult article for me to write because I do not take enough personal time and I know this!  But after having some great ‘down’ time in Texas I realized how important it is to have time to just chill and relax.

I’m going to share exactly how I’m going to start having more personal time in my life and you can do it right along with me!

Here are the simple steps:

  1. Realize that having personal time is important and that you deserve it.  This may be the hardest step of all so stop for a minute and tell yourself that you are extremely worthwhile and that you know that if you take time for yourself you will be a better person in everything else that you do.
  2. Make a list of things you like to do but don’t take time to do.  For example:  Reading a fun book, taking a nap, going for a walk, treating yourself to a manicure, pedicure, or massage, going to a movie in the middle of the day (I love this and Cynthia and I did this in San Antonio!), calling up a good friend, etc. You get the idea.
  3. Go to your calendar and pick out at least one time in each of the next 4 weeks that you’re going to do something fun for you.  Go ahead and pick more times if you’d like but at least one. (more…)
