I’ll take over now

My birthday was a few weeks ago and Bruce and I took the family (minus our girls who need to move back to Sioux Falls!), plus his parents, out for dinner.

About halfway through the dinner I noticed a lady at a nearby table get up and she was choking. Her husband was patting her on the back, which was getting them nowhere, and then he tried to do the Heimlich Maneuver. It wasn’t going well.

Bruce’s back was to this couple so he didn’t see what was going on. When I realized what was happening I started shouting to Bruce, and even though he had no ideas why I was shouting “Get up, get up!”, he shot out of his seat and I pointed to the couple. Bruce saw the situation, walked quickly over, said something to the man, performed the Heimlich perfectly, and whatever the woman was choking on popped out of her mouth.

Bruce came back to the table and continued eating. The whole thing just took a few seconds and Bruce was so calm I wondered, ” Did this really happen?”

The next day I asked him if he felt panicked when he saw the woman choking.

“No.”

“Did you worry if you could help her?”

“No.”

“What did you say to the husband?”

“I’ll take over now.”

Seriously. Isn’t this the kind of man you want in an emergency? I sure do!

I’ll take over now.

We need to have people in our life that can take over AND we need to know when to let them take over. That can be hard and our pride can get in the way.

That husband didn’t know who Bruce was, he didn’t know Bruce was trained for a situation just like this, and he could have kept trying to help his wife which would not have been a good outcome.

What do you need help with? What do you need to turn over to someone else who does it better and will give you a more successful outcome?

Is it time to lose the pride and gain success? If not now, when?!

Essentialism, please

I have read and then re-read the book Essentialism: The Disciplined Pursuit of Less by Greg McKeown

Greg says the definition of essentialism is less but better. I love that! He also talks about how the word priority was singular for 500 years until we pluralized it in the early 1900’s. He says, Illogically, we reasoned that by changing the word we could bend reality. Somehow, we would now be able to have multiple ‘first’ things.

I think that is fascinating. How can we have multiple first things? Kind of silly.

I am the creator of the Clear the Desk Movement.  I adapted this term from the phrase ‘clear the decks’. To ‘clear the decks’ means to prepare for a particular event or goal by dealing with anything beforehand that might hinder progress.

Having too many ‘first’ things hinders progress.

I decided to take my Clear the Desk Movement philosophy to my office workroom closet. It was very organized but full of lots of ‘first things’. In fact, bins and bins and bins, nicely labeled, but too full.  It was time to change. It took me awhile and lots of decisions but I got rid of all the bins in the lower section of the photograph and now my closet is free of what is not essential.

This feels amazing.

I took my Clear the Desk Movement philosophy to my business as well. Of all my services and product offerings which was the most essential to my prospects, clients. and to me.  I had many ‘first’ things I offer. This took a lot of soul searching. I discovered that helping my audiences and clients get unstuck and stop feeling lost is my priority and essential to my business.

Greg says, When we don’t purposefully and deliberately choose where to focus our energies and time, other people – our bosses, our colleagues, our clients, and even our families – will chose for us, and before long we’ll have lost sight of everything that is meaningful and important.

What is essential to you? I mean really essential?

Maybe you don’t know. This is a very common feeling. I talk to so many people who feel lost.

This Saturday it will be the start of the second half of the year. Yes, we all ask, where did the time go?

Think of how much more excited you would be to enter the second half of 2017 with excitement if you were clear on your goals and clear on what is essential in your life.

If it weren’t for excuses

I don’t know who updates the blackboard at my Kosama gym each week but I love her!

I started thinking about excuses and how they can trap us into staying right where we are.

Have you given into any excuses lately?

  • Not enough time
  • Someone else does it much better than me
  • What will people think?
  • I don’t know how
  • It will take too long
  • I need a nap
  • I’m not a morning person
  • She might say no

How do I know these? Because I’ve uses all of these before and then I went nowhere.

Same with you?

How about making the rest of March the No Excuse Month? Seriously. When the thought creeps into your head, and excuses are very sneaky, say ‘Stop’. Then think of a way you can do it.  There is always a way.

If you don’t know, ask someone.

One of the reasons I’ve done so many things in my business is because I did them before I fully knew how. Like: Speaking, giving teleclasses, designing handouts in Microsoft Publisher, writing a newsletter and blog, etc.

Did they all succeed at first? Absolutely not! Did they eventually succeed? Yes. But, they would not have if I had let my excuses win and never started.

What excuse will you kick to the curb today?!

Sometimes it’s the little bit extra

Last Sunday I was registered to run the Avera Race Against Breast Cancer 5K.

I was so excited. I ran this last year and the whole event is so awesome.

I’ve been fighting a really bad cough and all the side effects that go along with it and wasn’t sure I could run but I was NOT going to miss the packet pick up. I want my t-shirt!

avera-packet-pickupThe day before the race I went downtown to get my packet. I parked in the back and I was surprised to see how they decorated the area leading up to the store. They really did the little bit extra. Actually, a lot extra. And, this was in the back! Imagine what they did to the front?

The extra effort they did made me want to run the race even more!
Unfortunately, I wasn’t well enough to run and I was so disappointed. But, I couldn’t stop thinking about the extra effort they did even for the packet pick-up experience.

They made what could have been a just a normal packet pick-up time – fun!

Have you ever been the recipient of someone or a company doing that little bit extra? How did it make you feel?

The good news is that it doesn’t take much these days to make someone feel special. With e-mail, texts, social media, etc. we are losing the personal touch so when it does happen – wow!

bike-path-treesAs I was riding my bike recently on the bike trail in town I started thinking about all the different kinds of people who enjoy the trail.

• Serious bicyclists going extremely fast
• Regular bicyclists – like me!
• Joggers
• Runners – there is a difference between those who jog and those who really run
• Parents with children in the carrier behind their bikes
• Children on small bike pedaling furiously to keep up with their parents!
• Older couples taking a leisurely walk
• People who hop on it for a shortcut to work
• Photographers shooting senior pictures
• And so many more~~
One thing they all have in common is their desire for movement and to enjoy the outdoors.

Which got me thinking about my subscribers to my Wednesday Wisdom. My list includes people in different stages of life and work. This is one of the reasons I enjoy writing my weekly posts – the variety of the readers. But, one thing you all have in common is the openness to think differently and the desire to take the next step.
