2015 Success Now: Action Step #30 – Set Yourself Free

Today is the last post in my ‘2015 Success Now’ series. I feel sad.  

When I started this series I had no idea what December would hold for my family.  Absolutely no idea.  

If I had known I would have never started this series. But, I am so glad I didn’t know because while I hope you have learned from this series; so have I and I have enjoyed writing each post. 

Also, I have loved the comments you have e-mailed me about how these action steps are changing your business and your life. I feel like I’ve gotten to know many of you better and I love that feeling!

December-2014-calendarDid December fly by for you?  It certainly did for me. Not necessarily the 12 days in the hospital with Emily but now that all seems like a blur.

This morning I went back to my Kosama gym after being gone 20 days. If you go regularly to a gym and had to stop for any reason then you know how hard it is to get back in the swing again. Not so much physically; but mentally.

My plan was to go to my normal class at 6:10 am and I hit the snooze button several times and then decided to go to the 9 am class.  As the time got closer and closer to 9 am I came up with all sorts of excuses not to go. I knew it would be hard for me to keep up with the others in the class, I knew I’d tire easily, I knew I’d be upset that I wasn’t in the condition I was 20 days ago, and on and on. 

I went anyway.  Please read this again – I went anyway. 

During this ‘2015 Success Now’ series I have given you a lot of action steps to take to get into shape for 2015. A lot!  Really too many to start and keep going in a 30-day period.

My goal in giving these to you was not that these are steps you do once and you are done.  All of them must become a way of life for you to really get the best advantage from them.  They are steps you do over and over consistently.

kosama-12-30-14I went to Kosama today and you know what?  It wasn’t as bad as I thought!  Yes, I went at a slower pace than others but as the class continued I became stronger and stronger.  When the class was over I was super surprised to see that the calories I burned were not a lot less than I burned per class before my 20-day break.

Isn’t that interesting?  We can get back in shape much quicker than we think.  As you look over the 29 action steps I gave you since December 1 you may have started a few and then stopped. That’s ok.  Pick them up again. It won’t be as hard as you think.

Today I want you to set yourself free from thinking:

  • If I tried it once and gave up it’s not worth doing


  • If I try one of these steps and don’t do it perfectly it was a waste of time


  • There are just too many action steps to take to get me ready for success in 2015.  I’ll just do things like I’ve done in the past and hope for the best.

Set yourself free from any thoughts of what you wanted to have happened in the past 30 days but didn’t.  Set yourself free and start again.

2015 Success Now: Action Step #29 – Seek and You Shall Find

perfect-fit-client-collagesSit back in your chair and think back to a day when you were working with the absolute perfect client. Did the time fly by? Was the experience a total joy?!

Think about that person.  What was their age, where did they live, what type of industry are they in, what was their title, and then think about their attitudes, behaviors, and beliefs.

What if you could work with someone like that every day?

It can happen if you are extremely clear about your perfect-fit client.  Take the time right now to think about this wonderful person.

Now, write down all of their attributes.

At my very first SuccessPlus retreat for women entrepreneurs in 2010 I had the ladies cut out pictures, sayings, etc. that personified their perfect-fit client and arrange them in a picture frame. This way they could look at it every day.

When they wrote marketing copy they looked at their picture.

When they designed their program pricing they looked at the picture.

When they thought about what networking events to attend they looked at their picture and made the decision to go based on if that perfect-fit client would attend.

When they decided to look for places to speak to share their expertise they would look at their picture first and prepare their presentation based on what that client would want and need to hear.

The list could go on and on.

Are you ready to put together your perfect-fit client collage? There is no time like the present. When you are clear on who you really want to work with everything gets a lot clearer in your business.

2015 Success Now: Action Step #28 – Specialize and be Remembered

magic-wandI’ve had the honor of speaking many times at the National Association of Professional Organizers national conventions. At one of my sessions I had the audience stand and asked those to sit who did not feel they were an expert at what they did. Almost 75% of the room sat down.

This was heartbreaking.

I then told those who sat down to stand up again and I waved my magic wand over all of them and declared to them “You are an expert…right now!”

Years ago I was asking my business coach, Mark LeBlanc, about attending another certification program.   He paused for a long time and then said “Elizabeth, you know enough right now.”

Words that changed my life then and they keep changing my life.

I have nothing against furthering your education, getting certified, etc. but if you are waiting for that next popular thing (whatever it is) to learn and then you will go out and get clients…you are fooling yourself. I encourage you to go to conferences on how to market and grow your business but as far as learning more on how to do what you to…you know enough.

You are an expert now. If I were with you I’d wave my magic wand over you!

Stand up, put your shoulders back and declare “I am THE expert in  ___________________”.  If the back of your business card claims 10 fields you specialize in pick the ONE you love the most as your field of expertise and get rid of the other 9 on the back of your card.

Look at your website, your marketing materials, etc.  Is your expertise clear?  If not, make some changes.

Now is not the time to be all things for all people.  Now is the time to be the expert in what you love the most for the sliver of population that needs exactly what you offer. This is what it takes to be remembered.

Start off 2015 as THE expert.

2015 Success Now: Action Step #27 – Stand Up

look-back-on-the-yearStand up, please, with a pen and paper. Ok, where you are standing is Sunday, Dec. 28, 2014.

Now, walk about 10 steps and stop.  You are now at Sunday, Dec.28, 2015.  Turn and look back to your original spot.

You are looking back at the past year (12-28-14 to 12-28-15) and it was an amazing year.

Answer these questions:

  • What did you bring in for gross revenue?
  • What did you achieve in your business?
  • What did you start doing?
  • What did you stop doing?
  • What kind of clients did you work with?
  • How many new clients hired you?
  • What vacations did you take?
  • How is your physical health?
  • How is your emotional health?

Go back to your original spot of today.  Smile as you think about the amazing year you are about to have in 2015. Relax. Breathe.

Now, get out your calendar and wall calendar from Action Step #24 and get what you need scheduled in your calendar so your dreams come true.

2015 is going to fly by.  You will blink and it will be one year later.  Make it a great year by creating a vision now.

2015 Success Now: Action Step #26 – Simplify the Search

file-foldersI’m curious if your ‘to file’ pile may be as high as your filing cabinet!

Did you know that 80% of what you file you never look at again? We keep way too much paper.

When you have a good filing system set up life at work and home gets so much better.

I’m not going to ask you to clean out your entire file cabinet today. I just want you to start with 10 folders. Yes, just 10.

Take 10 out right now and go through them with a skeptical eye. Do you REALLY need to keep the papers? If so, would a different label make more sense?

If you are not sure how long to keep certain documents here is a link to a great paper retention guide that may help you toss/recycle/shred what you don’t need to keep.

Tomorrow do another 10, and 10 the next day, and so on until you have gone through your entire file system. The next time you either need to file or find a paper you will thank yourself (and me!) for doing what may be a very boring task. Personally, I love going through file cabinets and getting good systems set up. But, that’s me! You can do this.

2015 Success Now: Action Step #25 – Surprise Someone

on-phoneI want you to do something really fun today! Look through your list of past clients and pick 3. Pick 3 that you loved working with and for whatever reason your time with them has ended.

Now, pick up the phone (no, not an e-mail) and call them. This is not a sales call. You don’t even want sales on your mind. You call to simply tell them what a joy it was to work with them and that you wish them an amazing 2015.

Done. End of story.

2015 Success Now: Action Step #24 – Shape Your Year

wall-calendarI love seeing my year at a glance.  On the wall by my desk is a year “At-A-Glance” wall calendar.  This is where I write in my speaking engagements, my own workshops and teleclasses, and my time off.

Time off?  For years that was not in my vocabulary.  It’s still a new term for me.  But, I know if I don’t plan it – it won’t happen.

I’ll give you a few days to get your year calendar and then schedule time to plan out the year.  When do you want your time away? What events will you hold to market your business? Plot them on the wall calendar and then put them in your daily calendar.

I purchased my calendar right before I ended up going to Denver for 2 week so a soon as I’m back I’ll be planning my year, too. I have a number of exciting events planned all ready that are just waiting to get on this calendar.

Having this calendar on the wall near your desk gives you a snapshot as the year progresses.  I want you to have at least 1-4 events each month where you are sharing your expertise to prospects.

Are you ready to shape you year and plan ahead or sit back and hope for the best?
